PRESS RELEASE – OCTOBER 2008 

The Deutsches Haus is proud to dedicate its 2008 Oktoberfest celebration to the 80-year-existence it has enjoyed in its historic facility at 200 South Galvez Street.  The much-beloved Deutsches Haus location is in danger of being lost to the wrecking ball, and this year’s Oktoberfest could be the last one held at the structure that has been its home since 1928.

 The Deutsches Haus site and its surrounding neighborhood have been identified by the LSU Health Sciences Center as a probable location for a new LSU hospital. A review process is currently under way, and though no decision has been made, it remains unclear how Deutsches Haus would be affected should the project move forward.  Organization officials have received no assurance their Haus will be preserved as a functioning home for the Deutsches Haus organization and its many affiliated groups.

 The Deutsches Haus is a social and cultural organization honoring German heritage that dates back to the 19th century. It is an important part of the cultural heritage of New Orleans, commemorating the German contributions to the city, hosting social and cultural activities throughout the year and sponsoring numerous cultural outreach and scholarship programs.

 It is best known, however, for its popular Oktoberfest, which attracted more than 18,000 last year -- a record it is already on its way to breaking. Given the broad support Deutsches Haus has received from thousands of patrons, preservation organizations and government officials, it seemed only a fitting tribute to dedicate this year’s fall festival to the organization’s home of 80 years.

 Oktoberfest continues every Friday and Saturday night through the end of October. Doors open at 5 PM, and admission is $5 with fine German food available either a la carte or as a dinner combination.  German bands rotate throughout the evening, and the selection of beer on tap is better than ever.
